Golf Iron Swing
Learning golf iron swing techniques from a pro is your best option. Jones again, in Secrets Of The Master: “… the very long driver whips his hips around like a flash.”
Some more simple math yields more appreciation for hip-rotation speed (and reveals an insidious connotation from the word “swing”): McTeigue, in that same article and still tracking the whiphead, averaged the pros’ ‘backswings’ at 0.80 seconds. Since the hips stop coiling .06 second before the whiphead, we need to subtract .06 from .80 equals 74 hundredths of a second for the elapsed time of the hip coiling during the lift ‘n coil. The pros turn their hips on average 55 degrees during the lift ‘n coil, according to McTeigue. Dividing 55 degrees by 74 hundredths of a second equals 0.74 degrees per hundredth second as the speed of hip rotation during the lift ‘n coil.
But as the hips uncoil to impact, they rotate through this 55 degrees and roughly another 60 degrees (look how far Matt’s hips have uncoiled on the previous page, and he’s not even to impact). 55 + 60 = 115 degrees. 115 degrees divided by 35 hundredths of a second equals 3.29 degrees per hundredth second as the speed of hip rotation up to impact during the flail. Finally, 3.29 divided by 0.74 equals 4.4. That is, the the pros’ hips up to impact during the flail are rotating 4.4 times as fast as they were during the lift ‘n coil. (Imagine the difference between driving a car 10 miles/ hour vs. 44 miles/hour!) Ben’s word choice of “snap” is right on.
But, come to think of it, how do you reconcile “snapping” within a “swing”?? Has “swing” encouraged you to practice an easy, graceful move? One that could never include an abrupt (“....snap....with tremendous speed....”) firing of the hips to start uncoiling?
“Swing”…..”pendulum”.....”rhythm”…..!?! Junk “swing”!!
