Golf Training Grip

A golf training grip is a valuable tool for developing a smoother swing.  The left thumb is parallel to the shaft and points straight down the shaft--you feel the club’s handle just to the left of the center of the underside of your thumb.  Concerning the right hand, its upside-down V also points to the right collarbone.  Note that the right thumb is not parallel to the shaft but is around toward the left side of the handle. Many amateurs let this V point to somewhere outside their right shoulders, which looks like not the place to be.

This and the previous two chapters have emphasized the speed with which the clubhead whips through the ball, and how a Tour-pro-like fondle and wristcock--supple-y applied--facilitate quickness. Are you starting to get at all uncomfortable with the word “club” to describe the implements used to flick a golf ball?

We’ve got a bit of a problem in that golfing implements have heads on the end, not tips. The applicability of ‘whip’ becomes even more apparent in the next chapter, so let’s stay with it as Swail’s replacement for ‘club’, and we’ll coin ‘whiphead’ and let it take the
place of ‘clubhead’.
